Dung Beetle and Ball
This art piece is named “Dung
Beetle and Ball”. It is a metal sculpture of a Dung Beetle rolling a ball of
dung. It is roughly a foot tall and is made of copper with nitrate being used to color the beetles back and head a
blue-ish green.(1)(5)
The sculpture was made by Fiona Campbell of the United Kingdom, she has written that it is one of her favorite pieces.(3) The sculpture was showcased in the Mall Galleries in London between the dates June 1st 2009 and June 6th 2009 and won David Shepherds 3-d Wildlife Artist of the Year Award for that year.(3) It is currently in a private collection in Bristol, a city in the South West England.(2)
Fiona was inspired to make this sculpture and other Dung Beetle art by her experiences in Africa and her affinity with Dung Beetles. In her own words: “Since my childhood, I’ve always been captivated by Dung Beetles”. “Their attachment to dung, the backward ball-rolling, their striking appearance, strength and perseverance appeal to my interest in the extra-ordinary”. She hopes that after viewing the sculpture more people will understand that the beetles roll balls with their back legs(instead of front) and why they love dung so much. Fionas respect and appreciation of Dung Beetles is so great that she even uses a Dung Beetle as her gravitas.(2)
